Red Cross is responding to disasters down the street, across the country and around the world.

CLINTON, IA (February 27, 2010)— With March proclaimed as Red Cross Month by President Barack Obama, Gateway Area Chapter today recognizes and thanks the supporters and volunteers whose efforts enable the Red Cross to respond to disasters down the street, across the country and around the world.

“The Red Cross works tirelessly to be there with help and hope when people need it most–and we are grateful for the public support that enables us to continue our work – here at home and abroad,” said Amber Wood, Executive Director. “Our community and our nation depend on the Red Cross in times of need, and the Red Cross depends on the support of people in American to achieve its mission.”

American Red Cross Responds Internationally and at Home to Chile Quake

American Red Cross Increases Chilean Earthquake Pledge to $500,000

Friday, March 05, 2010 — To respond to increasing needs following the Chile earthquake, the American Red Cross has doubled its pledge to $500,000 for relief operations and is providing 5,000 water-carrying cans from its warehouse in Panama to be distributed to those in need by the Chilean Red Cross.

Volunteers Respond to 8th Fire in Clinton County in 2010

Gateway Area Chapter was on the scene early this morning (Thursday, February 18, 2010), ensuring that the fire victim’s emergency needs were met. Basic human needs such as a place to stay, food to eat, necessary medications or health items, and clothes to wear are provided first. Red Cross mental health counselors are also available to assist the fire victims and their families.

“Each year, on average, the Gateway Area Chapter responds to 24 to 30 local disasters in the Gateway Area. This is the eighth fire in Clinton County that local volunteers have responded to in the first eight weeks of 2010,” reported Amber Wood, Executive Director. “It has been an exceptionally busy time for the Red Cross and our volunteers. In the recent weeks, our compassionate, trained, and dedicated volunteers have responded to fire scenes at all hours of the day and nearly every day of the week fulfilling our mission to ensure that the emergency needs of the victims are being met.”
