Course Descriptions:
Introduction to Disaster Services - This online course will introduce you to American Red Cross Disaster Services and show you how your support is critical to our mission. Visit this link to take the course: http://www.redcross.org/flash/course01_v01/. If you do not have internet access, please come to our chapter office to use a computer.
Client Assistance System (CAS) – This course introduces you to the online database that houses all Red Cross client assistance information. All client caseworkers need to be familiar with CAS. Prerequisite – Fulfilling Our Mission.
Client Casework: Providing Emergency Assistance – Trains Red Cross caseworkers on how to conduct effective client interviews and provide appropriate assistance to help meet a client’s immediate disaster-caused or disaster-aggravated needs. Prerequisites – Fulfilling Our Mission, Mass Care.
Collaborating to Ensure Effective Service Delivery – Participants will gain an understanding of what a liaison is and what they do in building collaboration with diverse internal and external stakeholders and how this translates into increased trust, appreciation, and goodwill toward the American Red Cross.

Mass Care Overview – Participants will learn the activities performed by the Mass Care group in support of a disaster relief operation, including sheltering, feeding, and bulk distribution. Prerequisite – Fulfilling Our Mission.
Disaster Assessment: An Overview – Introduces the critical role of disaster assessment, explore related preparedness tasks, learn how to collect and communicate disaster assessment information, and become familiar with how disaster assessment information supports management and service delivery decisions. Prerequisite – Fulfilling Our Mission.
Disaster Mental Health: An Overview – Introduces participants to ways Disaster Mental Health supports relief workers and people affected by disasters. This course is designed for people primarily outside the mental health field. Prerequisites – none.
Emergency Operations Center/Incident Command Liaison – Prepares Red Cross volunteers and employees who will be assigned to government and emergency settings to work collaboratively with Red Cross partners, helping to ensure a coordinated response that results in effective service delivery. Prerequisites – Collaborating to Ensure Effective Service Delivery; sufficient operations knowledge.
ERV: Ready, Set, Roll – Prepares you to operate an Emergency Response Vehicle (ERV) and its equipment safely and effectively to meet feeding and other service needs of people affected by disaster. Prerequisites – Community Services Overview; valid driver’s license; clean driving record; at least 21 years old.
Foundations of Disaster Mental Health – Prepares licensed mental health professionals to provide for and respond to the psychological needs of people across the continuum of disaster preparedness, response and recovery.

Fulfilling Our Mission: Translating Your Compassion Into Community Action – Introduces potential disaster volunteers and others to the role of the Red Cross in the community’s actions in preparing for, responding to and recovering from emergencies and disasters. Prerequisites – none.
Fundamentals of Disaster Assessment – This two part course introduces the critical role of Disaster Assessment, explores related preparedness tasks, and teaches how to collect and communicate disaster assessment information. Part One is an online component taken through the Learning Management System (LMS), contact the Gateway Area Chapter for information. Part two is instructor-led.
Health Services Response Workshop – Designed to orient licensed or certified health professionals to the roles and responsibilities of a Health Services Associate when working on behalf of the American Red Cross to meet the disaster-related health needs of clients. Prerequisite – Fulfilling Our Mission.
Logistics: An Overview – Provides basic information about the processes of the Material Support Services activities in support of an American Red Cross disaster relief operation. Prerequisite – Fulfilling Our Mission.
Logistics Simulation – Provides participants an opportunity to practice their knowledge and skills needed to run a successful logistical operation in their local chapter. Prerequisites – Fulfilling Our Mission; Logistics Overview.
Psychological First Aid – Prepares participants to provide basic care, comfort and support to people who are experiencing disaster-related stress. Prerequisite – Fulfilling Our Mission; Working w/ Total Diversity.
Public Affairs in Disaster 1 – Purpose of this course is to assist Red Cross and volunteer staff in working with the Public Affairs function on a local disaster relief operation and to initiate the PA function on a State or Major disaster operation. Prerequisite – Introduction to Disaster Services.
Serving People with Disabilities Following a Disaster – Course consists of two components, an online section and instructor led section. This course outlines American Red Cross policies and practices as they pertain to providing services to people with disabilities following a disaster. Prerequisite – Fulfilling Our Mission.
Shelter Operations – Prepares employees and volunteers of the Red Cross to manage shelter operations effectively and sensitively as a team while meeting the needs of people displaced as a result of a disaster. Prerequisite – Mass Care Overview.
Shelter Simulation – Provides participants with an opportunity to apply the knowledge, skills and abilities required to operate a successful shelter.
